Working with individuals

Adults

Our therapists work collaboratively with their adult clients to select interventions to help them to best achieve their goals. We work with our clients to monitor progress and to adjust our focus as needed. All our therapists work with adults and are available either in-person or online.

Young People

We have therapists with a special interest in working with young people. They have a wonderful affinity with young people and use a range of creative approaches to assist them in achieving their goals. Where required, family therapy can be very useful as part of therapy.

Children

We have several therapists including an educational and developmental psychologist who have expertise in working with children and their families. Using child-focused approaches, they help children to manage difficult emotions and to build resilience.

Treatment Approaches

Emotionally Focused

We help our clients to move into and through their most vulnerable emotional experiences in order to learn from them and to create lasting change. We help people to:

  • Process painful emotions and past traumas
  • Connect with vulnerable emotions and core values
  • Challenge themselves to overcome obstacles
  • Send clear signals to those who matter to them
  • Create corrective emotional experiences
  • Learn self-regulation skills
  • Achieve balance in life

Evidenced-Based Practical Strategies

We aim to provide emotional regulation skills and strategies to help our clients to overcome fears, to step out of unhelpful patterns of behaviour and to live meaningful lives. These come from approaches such as:

  • Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Behaviour Therapy (such as exposure therapy)
  • EMDR/li>
  • Schema Therapy
  • Self-compassion skills
  • Mindfulness training
  • Assertiveness and communication skills
  • Parent training

Focus on Connection

We prioritise the therapeutic connection, knowing that people cannot challenge themselves and be vulnerable unless they feel emotionally safe with their therapist. These values extend through all levels of our service:

  • Warm and friendly administrative team
  • Clear and respectful communication
  • Caring and responsive therapists
  • Collaborative goal-setting and treatment-planning
  • Feedback-informed treatment via simple assessment-measures
  • Sensitive and attuned approaches that honor the client’s individuality
  • Inclusive and accepting of diversity

Process of therapy for individuals

We understand that coming to see a therapist can be an extremely daunting task. We aim to make our clients feel comfortable from their very first phone call or email with us right throughout the therapy process.

Getting
Started

Once you have chosen a therapist and booked an appointment time, we will ask you to complete a brief questionnaire so that your therapist knows a little about you before your first visit. We firmly believe that finding the right therapist for you is a large part of the success of therapy. Feeling comfortable and understood is key to making progress towards your goals. The first session allows you to see how you feel with your therapist and for your therapist to see if they can assist you with your goals for therapy. Your therapist will ask you to share about yourself and your concerns as part of this process. Please feel free to ask your therapist any questions about their approach so that you feel clear about the path forward.

Tailored Treatment

Some people come to therapy to work on a single and specific issue, and others come to work through more complex and long-standing concerns such as making sense of their direction in life or overcoming an obstacle to happiness. For others, therapy is an opportunity or to process a stressful event, a loss, or a trauma. The initial sessions allow you and your therapist to collaboratively decide on the treatment options and to develop a treatment plan together. As we see it, you and your therapist are a team – working together to help you to feel more connected with yourself and your life. Your therapist will create a flexible treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs.

Information

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see one of our therapists privately. For those who would like to access Medicare rebates, we accept referrals from GPs depending on which clinician you see.

Parental involvement:

For our youngest clients, parents are part of the treatment process; from initial goal-setting to the initiation of take-home tasks and the reviewing of progress. For older children and young people, parental involvement is negotiated at the outset of treatment taking into account the family needs and the young person’s wishes.

"All human suffering is easier to bear with the support of safe others. We are here to break the isolation and share the load. With us, you are welcome, safe and cared for."
